A Brief History of St. Peter & St. Paul

In 1901, a group of purposeful Ukrainian Immigrants founded a
brotherhood in honor of St. Peter & St. Paul, Branch 55 of the Ukrainian National Association, with headquarters in Jersey City, NJ.

Property was purchased by the Brotherhood in 1902 at 220 Jane Street, Carnegie, with the intentions of using the home not only for meetings but for worship. In 1903 the house was remodeled and by March the first service was celebrated by Fr. Theophane Obushkevich. That fall, the small community thrived to 50 families, a charter was requested, and the Property adjacent to the church was purchased.

The new parish was in need of a larger place of worship and Iwan Dankowsky and Hnat Stanchak, on the congregation’s behalf, raised $14,000 visiting city to city, and state to state to meet that need.

On August 4, 1903 the charter was granted and on August 8th the parish was declared a legally functioning entity. The church building was begun and completed in 1906 with the first Diving Liturgy celebrated on January 7, 1907 (Christmas Day).

The other properties of the parish were acquired in quick
succession: the rectory and home for the choir director/diak at the end of 1908, the cemetery land in 1915, and in 1927 the parish hall was erected. When the road was widened in 1957 the choir director’s residence was transformed into the new rectory.

St. Peter & St. Paul has been guided by 13 Spiritual Fathers, the current pastor being Fr. Steve Repa.
